I miss this family. The Gurules. I photographed them for what felt like years but it wasn't: it was just the one of the fullest years of their life as a family. Two little girls under 7 and a third on the way. And then they moved to Colorado last fall.

I remember having to say goodbye to this little girl, the one here in her velvet dinosaur dress and the temporary skull tattoos on her wrists. In this photoshoot she found a teeny tiny tree frog in the grass. She was so delicate with him, letting him walk wetly across her forearm. I was a nature lover as a kid (and as an adult ofc) but I was not tomboy-ish. I loved kids like this when I was their age and I admire them deeply now even more. So independent. Brave. Courageous in crying when they felt like crying and cracking up when they felt like cry-laughing. Being unquestionably themselves, from the clothes they picked that morning to the way they let you know whether or not they approve of a stranger. It took some time with me - 30 minutes or so of sensing me which is long time for a 7 year old - but we got there.

The last day when I left she was swinging on the playground swings. I told her mom, Evelyn, the one with the fairytale long hair that that her husband and girls blessed with dry leaves, that I ought to just leave without making my goodbye a big deal. So I just sort of took on last picture of them by the swings and walked away with my camera. I felt really emotional.

You get to know people. You grow with them. As a photographer who I would say seasonally now photographs families I don't take "dark" pictures of families but take pictures that are not always light. I want to see everyone's little expressions. Little inner moments like hers here in the first frame. Of course I get color and activity and candid laughing. But there's a whole other gallery I share with families.

Something about the beach in black and white seems right to me. These are pictures from 2023 in Atlantic City in the off-season. I bumped into them looking forward something else so thought I’d post. Also apropos for the end of August as summer dips into fall. I haven’t seen the beach this summer… so these will have to do, emo as they are.

A few India film diptych type composites along with the the original frames. Any stand out? I’m always curious with myself what scenes / objects / details stand on their own. I have a tendency nay a problem with getting very close to my subjects (animate and otherwise) and neglecting the context behind them. Anyone else? I’m thinking I’ll start treating it as a choice and layer images to see what I like.

I tucked into a side street. I wanted to wander down it just to see what and who might be there. And to take only film pictures if something called to me.

As I walk I notice people looking at me. Different kinds of looks - curious, perplexed even, never judgy though. The kids on their way home from school, daughters with their school-braids in getting picked up on motor bikes by their fathers, they must be wondering what a photographer is doing in their neighborhood.

I hoped I wasn’t intruding. I looked most intently at trees and cooking pots and the colors of houses, to be fair.

I'd made my way down the road for a while, about 3 minutes of walking on what I thought was a connecting neighborhood road, only to find it wasn’t: it was a dead end. I'm sure there were signs I couldn’t read telling me this.

The only way to get back to the main street was to return through those very same people, past those very same houses.

So at the end of the road, beside the roosters pecking atop a compost pile, I pivoted. I told myself to get there by walking with confidence, to walk with the air that, ah yes, it was my intention from the start to traverse this one-way road and double back.

I’m a bit embarrassed but delighted by my embarrassment. To be embarrassed when no one is there to share it with! What a gift. I smile to myself. I rub my smile away. I’m alone of course and exploring. What could one get “wrong”?

Then not 10 yards or so from the rooster heap, I see not a resident or a child walking home from school but myself. Clear, colorful, vertical, propped up under a tree: a mirror version of me. I stop and adjust my settings, wondering whether to leave my face open or pull the camera to the bridge of my eye. And I go with it: a photo of me with the camera affixed to my face.

A photo of me lost in time and place. It doesn't matter much to you but this is a moment I remember and I actually got my film settings where I needed them. I wanted a bright red punch, deep blanket blues. I'm happy to see where time pinched me.

The first raindrops from my first ever monsoon shower in Bangalore. July 20, 2026, @copperandcloves coffee shop, Indiranagar.

I remember how it smelled. Earthy and coffee-tinted. An edge of concrete and book paper. I remember the small tapping of rain against those leaves.

It's a great day when your film comes back.

The film did not get lost.
The lab did not destroy it.
I did not over or underexpose a whole roll of film.
The multitude of airport scans did not corrupt my zip lock bag lumpy with spools of film.

Now the exact cloud-light from that Monday at a coffeeshop in Indiranagar Bengaluru, a few minutes before I first met Tejal @bytejal, is true and clear and here again. Slightly warm and rusted-rose colored as it is at least for me with Fujifilm.

Baby Elliott. First-time parents Cara @cmaaghul and Matt's pride and joy. Photos from June 2026.

I walk into the home of first-time parents and at first things seem more or less ordinary: a big lovable dog greets me at the front door, there's an un-alarming amount of stuff on the floors and side tables, the shades are drawn letting in good afternoon light, the parent who answers the door is welcoming and hospitable. But then the mom or dad walks down the stairs carrying the little bundle, and everything changes. I meet the new center of their life.

I hadn't done an at-home family photoshoot in a while, 3 months at least, I think, so it felt new again for me entering a home where a fresh new human lives.

If mom and dad are the sun and moon, then this little guy is their planet, bustling with life and drool and fuzz and intellect, a little genius calculating the world and his place in it at record-breaking speed.

The magnitude of a moment like this is underplayed affectionately.
They introduce him warmly, and I might poke his belly or gently grab a socked foot. I speak in a high-pitched voice to him like I do to my cats or dog.

But this is momentous, and it's worth noting that the look on the parents' faces is humbled, proud, and at times euphoric. Look at the new dad's expression here. And the mom's.

As arduous and sleep-depriving as having a baby is, as surrendering life as you've known it to the adorable chaos and uncertainty and variable-laden little creature that is a human child, there's also no joy I think greater than introducing your little creation to someone new and maybe particularly the photographer who will see your child in a whole new way.

Child-full or child-free as adults, our lives and circumstances shift in unimaginable ways. Everything we know and love and prioritize can shift in a second. It’s horrifying and exhilarating. The gravity of it all in our everyday lives - including fear and doubt and bouts or droughts of energy - is real and deeply felt.

Auto (tuk-tuk) driver on break in #bengaluru.

While returning down a road in Gopalapura after going to the Nikon service store to fix some bits of rubber on my camera, I had passed by a little neighborhood street that interested me.

As soon as I tucked into the shaded street filled with colorful cars and orange and yellow flags and two-wheelers, this gentleman caught my attention. Right away he motioned to me that he wanted me to take his photo.

This wasn't an uncommon occurrence for me in Bangalore - to be walking along with my camera hoping I could photograph someone when someone came up to me and asked - but it always surprised me. That doesn't happen often in the US often, or at least Baltimore, but I love it when it does.

He leaned against this green tuk-tuk and situated himself in a contrapposto position. I liked how he adjusted his hand to rest high up on the black hood and jutted out his knee to get comfortable.

I took few frames, backing up and getting closer, then further away again. I thanked him in Kannada a few times and he went on his way. I like this shot the best because it includes more of the background. The front of the little yellow tiny truck; the blue two-wheeler most people cruise around in there, and the old knotted tree and some of the mall behind him.

This is a 'street portrait' in that we both knew I was isolating him for this photo. Lots of ppl don't want to be photo'd and I respect that choice but enough ppl do that it reinforces my thinking that many people accept the camera as a vehicle/window/opportunity for being seen and valued.

I'm curious where you all stand on this...

And thank you again to this gentleman. I don't know anything about him. I wish I did. If I can get this photo to him I will.

Portrait of my new friend, photographer Tejal @bytejal in the unused old portion of Russel Market, Bengaluru.

One of the main highlights of my recent trip back to Bengaluru was meeting Tejal @bytejal the founder of The Still Society @the.still.society.blr a photowalk group with workshops and a film photo walk event where she loans cameras to those who've never shot film.

I'd written with Tejal before arriving so we planned to meet up for a solo photowalk and one of her group events.

I clicked with her immediately because she's curious, excited and loves meeting people and you can tell all that within seconds of meeting her.

She's lively and creative and fierce and at just 20 years old she's leading one of the biggest new photowalk groups in Bengalore, a city of 14 million.

It's no small feat to curate events...period...much less for a group that needs to meet at a pin on a map at an exact time every week (and usually at 7:30am).

I of course was late and she still accepted me with a big hug and then gathered us together for a group photo.

This portrait is from the Russell Market photowalk I shared a few photos from earlier.

Here's the thing about markets: you don't actually need to shoot the markets themselves. I loved tucking in this behind-the-scenes storage space of sorts with a few of the other photographers.

We equally obsessed over this little rectangle of light on this blue garage-type door as any light-obsessed person would. We asked Tejal to step into the light.

The space smelled like old onions and potatoes with a hint of fish meat and rice and sleeping dogs and also it didn't smell much like anything.

At one point a cat skittered through. Latr we found her later perched on a stump devouring a meat seller's glossy scraps which was gross but very lucky for this cat.

Big question in this very wordy caption: who would be interested in an all women photowalk group?... respond with a "💯" if so...

*Note: Tejal is pronounced like TAY-jel the emphasis on the first syllable like "BAgel" but completely different? I don't know how to do phonetics here...)

Commuter bus parked near Binnipete, Bengaluru.

As much as I am intrigued by people and focus on them in my work I’m very drawn to objects and other inanimate objects.

These things seem animate to me because of how much life they have experienced through people.

A bus seat.
A door knob.
A lock on a door.
A tutu.
A brush.

These are beautiful objects to me because they are human adjacent - tools, fixtures, furniture. Their individual “selves” (how I see them independent from their human counterpart) begin to take on characteristics because of how they absorb us.

How many people have sat in these red plaid bus seats?
How many mothers with kids seated on their laps?
How many elderly folks have looked out the windows resting their heads on the glass?
How many emotions soaked through the cushions?
The phone calls and apologies laughing and inwardness these seats have witnessed.

There's a serenity in looking at these things like this.

For me I find calm looking at them through the camera.

As much as I am intrigued by people and focus on them in my work I’m very drawn to objects and other inanimate objects.

These things seem animate to me because of how much life they have experienced through people.

A bus seat.
A door knob.
A lock on a door.
A tutu.
A brush.

These are beautiful objects to me because they are human adjacent - tools, fixtures, furniture. Their individual “selves” (how I see them independent from their human counterpart) begin to take on characteristics because of how they absorb us.

How many emotions soaked through the cushions?

These two beautiful and and brightly dressed women let the little guy nibble on their fingers as they sat chatting in the early evening in Manjunath Nagar.

This is another frame from my morning photowalk last Saturday w/ The Still Society @the.still.society.blr hosted by @bytejal and guest-led by @storiesbymridul.

This narrow street holds market stalls, shops and homes and is one of the spokes off of Russell Market in a area called Shivajinagar settled in the 17th century. Nearly half of Shivajinagar's residents are Muslims. The neighborhood is unique because it has a mosque, a church, and a temple within a block or two of each other...whereas most neighborhoods have multiple temples. The blend of cultures and religions here brings in a lot of visitors...including myself and a swarm of curious photographers this past weekend.

At first my focus was the mother brushing her daughter's hair and the colors around them along with the baskets. I later got closer, asked for a photo, and got more close up shots of them on film.

But I noticed this two-wheeler coming into frame (I don't know if there's ever been a still street here so it made sense a car or bike would zoom thru) but this one is particularly interesting to me. It's a Muslim family passing by a traditional Indian family home. I love how the little girl notices me as does the girl getting her hair brushed.

It was the most clearly diverse and blended area I'd seen yet and I enjoyed the blend of cultures all on one street.

P.S. I see this a lot around Banaglore. Muslim men dye their beards red/orange using natural henna (mehandi) to follow the traditions of Prophet Muhammad to cover gray hair. I also see that many older Indian men dye their hair red or some have a natural orange tint to their hair. Another interesting burst of color on the streets.

About the market: It was established in 1927 and officially opened in 1933. The namesake is after T.B. Russell, the municipal commissioner who planned its creation to serve the British civil and military station. But..the site of the market began much earlier as an open-air weekly market (santhe) centered around a clock tower built in 1820.

Photowalk Saturday 24.7.26 with The Still Society @the.still.society.blr and @bytejal at Bangalore's Russell Market.

I remember the fish smell in the market place. Bright sun on the tops of our arms. I remember the dusty webby signs at the market place with English words mixed with Kannada’s curling script on hand-painted signs: “C.N. Mutton
Stall / No. 52/ Russell Market Bangalore - 560051.” I remember the pinch of caffeine from the Americano and the rushing in of a new place like a slow wave curling me into it. I remember the man chopping off the faces of the silver fish, their pink mouths still puckered. I remember the man raking the knife over the fish’s scales sloughing the silver flakes onto a wet wooden stump. I remember feeling seen and foreign. I remember feeling invisible and brave. I remember biting into the dried kiwi for the first time and chewing its dry sweet leather. I remember the dog rolling onto its back in the dirt showing its freckled belly near an empty market stall.

Russell Market, one of the oldest marketplaces in Bangalore in 7:30am light. Early for me but worth it for the thin dust flecked light and deep shadows and bountiful stalls of flowers, fish, vegetables and a whole labrynth of car parts (photos forthcoming). As an animal lover and veg only gal the fish market is hard to stomach. Imagine the smell. And the sweet fish faces getting sliced. Alas Tejal and I and all the other photographers pushed through and made many photos. Please check out their work on the channels mentioned.

Much of my time I spend admiring the flora and fauna here.

I know I mainly post photos of people and city scenes - and I am drawn to people for sure - but like any lover of color and texture and new life I'm lured by plants and animals I've never seen before (and ones I am used to seeing everyday like dogs and cats).

I remember wild orchids dripping over striped road partitions, light blue beings living private lives.

I remember white papery bouganvillas, mouths yawning for light, mixed into concrete walkways.

I remember the baby macaque monkey I spotted on top of a wall munching on a cookie. He clutched one tan biscuit in his hands and one in his feet, which I respect, since he'll already be prepared for his second.

I remember plucking plumeria flowers from the sidewalks, a little white starfish I tuck behind my ear. (Today I stuck a fallen orchid behind my ear and removed it only when it had wilted into a little caterpillar-like nugget.)

I remember street dogs ignoring us as we neared them, restraining our excitement in seeing napping dogs out on the pavement without any humans pulling them along. (I stick to the rules and let them sleep or finish their rice in peace. They are communal dogs, I'd like to say, not strays.)

I remember peering off the path in Sri Chamarajandra Park and entering its green heart: its bird calls and gigantic trees pocketing the noise from the ludicrously alive, snarling, honking street.

And I remember this lil squat cutie lab mix approaching me, tongue drooping, looking for attention and scritches and being permitted at last to touch his little astute blonde noggin.

In a lot of street photography, and photography in general, something feels off. I’ve sensed it for a while but couldn’t point to a specific reason why. Now I understand: I’m uncomfortable with people being used as symbols.

UNIVERSES

People are walking universes. It’s hard to get to know a universe, especially in a momentary glance on a busy street. What I think photographers specifically give us is the chance to meet a universe without doing any of the work. I get the aesthetic choice for using people as symbols in photography. I get the rationale behind wanting a teenage girl to symbolize all teenage girls or an American soldier to represent all American soldiers.

But I also realize what’s lost when an artist makes the choice to use a person instead of seeing them. The sentiment that comes across in representative artwork feels less than what I feel and experience when I see a picture where the person has been seen and valued as an individual by the photographer.

Monica has lived most of her life right here in Baltimore and is a phenomenal architect at CannonDesign. She’s also simply a fascinating person to hang out with and learn about during a photoshoot ❤️!

In this short trip to NYC, on my photowalks, I was more interested in objects and people behind the scenes. I was particularly drawn this time to sidewalk cellar doors (mm Donny Darko) and workers below the ground floor or in less obvious people-facing positions. (I was also interested in parking garages, but I'm not sure I photo'd any of them in an interesting enough way to share here...) Another approach to photographing this scene: I could have come back at the end of this man's shift and given him my number and asked him to call me or to meet me so that I could learn about him. I could have asked his name, for him to tell me about his life, his work, his favorite restaurants in the city, what his shifts are like, his favorite childhood memory. As it was, I saw him, positioned myself, positioned myself lower to get him more fully in frame, and kept walking. I was somewhere on 7th, I think, between 35th and 37th in Midtown at around 9:30pm.

But the "sonder" of it all hit me anyway, and it always does in cities, especially on photo walks, and even more especially in New York City. (Sonder = "the realization that each person you pass is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.") It sort of sums up street photography for me, or my approach to it anyway. If you're shy, that's ok. If you don't ask follow-up questions or ask for permission, that's ok too. It is fascinating to get a fuller story. But I also stand by the fact that not getting a fuller story is interesting too. The noticing itself is the art to me, the first and most important part of it anyway.

P.S. Our train happened to depart precisely when that couple was scaling up the Empire State Building btw. I'm ok with missing that. I would have been thinking the worst possible things were about to happen....All good.

Portrait of an artist: my dear friend Kiirstn @kdoubleii 6.22.26

Kiirstn just celebrated her 5-year "freelance-iversary" as a full time photographer. Five years in any entrepreneurial capacity is a big milestone: it means you've crossed the Rubicon of sorts - there's no turning back now. You're IN it. And Kiirstn is thriving as a Baltimore artist.

In a season/era of uncertainty Kiirstn constantly creates stunning work and develops her voice and spirit with each shoot and personal project.

It's complicated out here. As artists, we're constantly trying to figure out:

who we are and who we're not;

what we want to concentrate on and what we don't;

who we were before we got here and why that matters.

It can be existential but even more than that, at least for me, it's in service to this question:

how I can create and provide the best work and stay grounded in what matters most to me.

I could go on and on...(actually maybe I will continue this in an essay...) but for now: happy 5-years to Kiir @kdoubleii 📸🌷

Kiirstn just celebrated her 5-year "freelance-iversary" as a full time photographer. Five years in any entrepreneurial capacity is a big milestone: it means you've crossed the Rubicon of sorts - there's no turning back now. You're IN it. And Kiirstn is thriving as a Baltimore artist.

In a season/era of uncertainty Kiirstn constantly creates stunning work and develops her voice and spirit with each shoot and personal project.

It's complicated out here. As artists, we're constantly trying to figure out:

who we are and who we're not;

what we want to concentrate on and what we don't;

who we were before we got here and why that matters.

It can be existential but even more than that, at least for me, it's in service to this question:

how I can create and provide the best work and stay grounded in what matters most to me.

I could go on and on...(actually maybe I will continue this in an essay...) but for now: happy 5-years to Kiir @kdoubleii 📸🌷
