I asked this question, posed by Slow Talk @slowtalkpbc to my lifelong friends Eric and Maria: "If you could wave a magic wand, what would a more human experience of healthcare look like?" Both as former workers in the healthcare industry I knew they'd have a lot to see. Here are their (shortened but still pointed and astute) answers to the wand question:

From Eric:
"Pointing to one fundamental improvement only, in my opinion, there needs to be a commitment toward revising our current multi payer system to provide more universal access, a Healthcare for All model.

Many countries thought of as leaders provide this for their citizens, but here the insurance provider as a profit center remains paramount. It boils down to priorities. As a nation, we have to decide what really is of the most fundamental importance.
It is said that Healthcare spending in the USA dwarfs that of most countries, but our outcomes are often far worse. One wonders if there is an opportunity to improve the training model in medical schools? Likely the answer will come from all of the above areas."

From Maria:

"Working for 7 CEOs of a downtown academic medical center, I actually did wish for a magic wand many times during my 27-year career in Baltimore. Mostly, I wished for better communication between the clinical staff - amongst each other and also with the people who came to us for care. I wished for patient navigators to help people with challenges to receiving care, transportation, parking, reaching a live person on the phone, helping to breakdown complicated test instructions for all people, including those with language or cognitive challenges. Even though I have retired from my executive assistant role, I always felt that there are too many layers of personnel between the decision-makers and the bedside caregivers, those that are actually providing hands-on care."

"Find the stories. Healthcare is a collection of stories. The patients, the family members, the clinicians, the environmental services individuals, the greeters at the front door. Stories upon stories that intersect at unexpected moments. Stories that have a bidirectional impact, whether realized or not. When we know the stories, when we understand the stories, the dis-ease and the subsequent restoration of health take shape differently. The stories show us we aren't healing symptoms from a textbook, but rather encountering an entire life before and beyond that moment. The stories tell us that healing may be happening for the clinician just as much as it is for the patient; that health restoration is a collective focus rather than an individual, singular focus. The stories, when we listen, can transmute care, reminding us that healthcare is, in its nature, a sacred exploration of the human experience."

Slow Talk started in healthcare because it's a field that touches us all and it’s in crisis. The platform, which asks the patients, nurses and healthcare leaders, to participate in small 1-hour conversations via an app. I'll be participating in Wednesday's cohort to see what it's like. The Royal Blue @theroyalbluebar is looking so good and wild. Love the leopard theme in the back room. Sorry for sneaking around and taking pictures. I was tempted to go out on the dance floor but I didn't - i knew I'd get called out for that. It's a cocktail bar with a classic diner look and it's also well respected restaurant and a dance club (there's a disco ball glittering in the back). Highly recommend going by on a spring day (like whatever Tuesday was for us here in Baltimore) and enjoy the sun coming through the ice cube glass.

This Baltimore snow phenomenon is new to me but i saw it last thursday by old towne mall: a snow mountain covered with dirt and debris but it looks like a demolition mound. These these two kids frolicking on it made it look whimsical and dystopian. This ice won't melt til mid-May so you can see it too.

From @wbaltv11 : "An urban mountain of icy snow looks more like a demolition site at the Old Town Mall parking lot. Its slopes, covered in dirt and debris, tower over street lights.
It's become one of three dumping grounds for stubborn snow over the last month, alongside Pimlico Racetrack grounds and M&T Bank Stadium."

Denise @sharkythekid said a heartbreaking goodbye to Scooby when he crossed the rainbow bridge on 2.14.26. He was her special boy and always will be.

Born in Grenada and flown to his forever home in the US on Denise's sun-soaked lap, Scooby was a naturally sweet pup. An island boy at heart, he had a predilection for curling up on the porch in the sun and taking long naps in laps.

When he was a little one he had dark brown snout and throughout his life he was gentle taking treats from upturned palms.

While Denise and Angelika were on vacation, Scooby chose them to be his mommies. He trotted up to their beach side cottage and called it home. He knew right away they were dog lovers. I think dogs, just like little toddlers, know who is safe, playful and full of love the moment they meet them.

I got to photograph Scooby on one of his last days earth-side. He was so gentle and loved it when I scritched his little noggin. His big ears pointed straight up when he heard the neighbor dogs bark. It was my pleasure to have a sunny snow covered afternoon with him.

Denise just lost her other beloved dog just a few weeks earlier. The silence in their house and the little reminders of their pups (bowls, toys, leashes, balls long ago rolled under couches) must be unbearable.

Please know how much we all feel for you, especially all the "dog people" reading this. We get it. We get what it means to welcome a dog into our lives and what the particular torment when we have to let them go. They reach you on a nervous system level. They teach us how to love better and that love radiates through us.

This profound relationship is made stronger because of the short but momentous time we have with them. We love you and we miss you, Scoobs.

I know we're sick of snow but I just got my half-frame Ektar N35 @kodakektar (disposal camera style) b/w film back from two weeks ago and this is it. Note: there's no settings I can change for taking the picture in-camera. Flash or no flash are my options. So don't judge lol. The white chair disappears in the 4th slide...And doesn't the first one look like it was taken in 1953? I love that timeless feel..

More photos of the lovely Filipino woman students and I met this morning during the Towson High School ICE protest walkout march.

She jogged out of her house waving a Filipino flag. She has lived here in Towson since the 1970s and graduated from Towson High.

When these kids saw her crying they immediately enveloped her in a hug. No questions asked. She is suffering from a fresh personal loss in her family and is also feeling the threat of ICE around her.

The mix of personal grief and public pride in the youth created a particularly poignant moment during the march.

(I shared my IG with her so she can message me so I can either tag her or leave her be...but if you're reading this please know we <3 you!)

Schools across Baltimore County protested against ICE today.

The beautiful Filipino woman we met jogged out of her house waving a Philippines flag. She graduated from Towson High in the 1970s. While cheering with the students, she also shared some personal news about a profound loss in her family...students immediately consoled her by enveloping her in a hug. (You can hear her full story in my reel, posted previously, if you want to skip to the last few mins of that to hear her story).

Congrats to @towsoncivicaction for organizing such a peaceful and enthusiastic walkout even with tons of opposition from parents and local officials.

These kids know their rights and know how to fight for human rights. The signs says it best: "It's not political... this is about human rights." But rt it's politics too.

I came across this old photo and legit thought it was a stock photo that had slipped into my archives. But then I rembered: whose hands these are, the room around these hands, the pre-party nerves this person had, the smell of the place, the feel of the wood, the sound of clicking the shutter.

Had I not taken the photo I wouldn’t have remembered her hands or the emotion in them. But now I see it again.

It’s just a simple photo but I still like as part of a series.

To me it shows a pair of worried hands or at least hada- and the person belonging to them- in a state of unease. I could be wrong but at least a string of anxiety runs through this portrait.

And if you know me well you likely know I love thumbs - I think they’re particularly interesting and everyone’s thumb is so individual. I’ve written an entire essay about them in fact.

But anyway… I came across this photo playing Karim’s @karim.shehadeh new art challenge game “prompts” that he just launched on create.spot (link in bio) last week. Each week you get a new set of 3 words and you make art of whatever kind to embody/interpret/cut into/translate those words.

I’d actually move this picture to one of this week’s words: “indefinite.” Endless worry, concern, uncertainty expressed in one square. I love how our bodies quickly but often subtly externalize our internal feelings and states of mind, especially the hands.

Actually I’m going to try to draw this pair of hands and thumbs…and submit it for this week’s prompts. I look forward to failing and trying again.
